11 Roof Repair Tips: Find and Fix a Leaking Roof

1)  How to Find Roof Leaks

 

When you are trying to find a leakage on the roof, the important thing is roof penetration. Items that penetrate the roof are the cause leakage, Penetration may consist of chimneys roof vents, plumbing, and others. The simple method to track the leakage goes up, place a flashlight and explore the evidence of leakage. These leaks can be black marks, stains or mold.

 

2) A Trick for Finding Difficult Leaks

If you have a difficulty of finding a leak then here is a trick to find a leakage. Start soaking the area above where there is leakage. Segregate the areas one by one.  Your helper should inside the house to find the drip to appear. This task takes half an hour so be patient.

 

3) Solution for a Small Leak

Some leaks are very difficult to find. If you not getting up the leakage stains then look at the underside of the roof for ‘shiners.’ A shiner is a small nail.  When the carpenter nailing the roof sheathing, it moisturizes the area of escape into the cold attic from the rooms. 4) Fix Plumbing Vent Boots

These can be broken or rotted and allow water to work into the house with the pipe. You can buy new vent boots and replace it with the old one. 5) Fix Walls and Dormers

Always try to attempt a ‘mechanical’ fix whenever possible. It means that replacing or repairing these existing flashing rather than using any type of sealant.

 

10) Fix Small Holes

Sometimes small holes can casue of a big issue. You can find these holes from satellite dish or antenna that is mounting brackets or just about anything. Small can be fixed easily but not inject caulk in the hole.  You can fix them with flashing.

 

11) Leaks Around Brick Chimneys

Bad things only happen around brick chimneys. An easy way to fix is a new flashing under the old rusted stuff. The best fix is to cut a saw kerf into the mortar and install new flashing.
