Jennifer Aniston’s Designer Breaks Down Jen’s New Home | Celebrity Homes | Architectural Digest

Jennifer Aniston’s interior designer Stephen Shadley talks with Architectural Digest Editor-in-Chief Amy Astley about the ‘zen’ style and designs of the new home Aniston shares with husband Justin Theroux.

Jennifer Aniston takes AD inside her dreamy California home high above Los Angeles, Jennifer Aniston crafts a scene of pure domestic bliss with husband Justin Theroux, a spectacular midcentury house, and a trio of very happy dogs.

Aniston’s latest residential project is the reimagining of a Bel Air house that was designed by architect A. Quincy Jones and completed in 1965.

The actress acquired the property in 2011, after selling her beloved Hal Levitt–designed home in L.A.’s Trousdale Estates enclave (AD, March 2010) and attempting to relocate to Manhattan—a move ultimately thwarted by the rabid paparazzi that swarmed outside her Greenwich Village apartment building. When she bought the Bel Air property, it had recently emerged from a renovation by architect Frederick Fisher, which, despite its sympathetic embrace of Jones’s vision, skewed a bit too cool and minimal for Aniston’s taste.

Aniston enlisted the aid of AD100 interior designer Stephen Shadley, with whom she had collaborated on her previous L.A. home, to perform a similar alchemy in Bel Air—namely, to preserve the modernist ethos of the original scheme while softening some of its sharp lines and outfitting the interior with tactile, organic finishes and furnishings.

Aniston seconds the notion, pointing to the vintage Jean Royère Polar Bear sofa, Jacques Adnet armchairs, and Mies van der Rohe daybed arranged in the living room. Aniston credits the home’s deftly layered interiors to a team effort, with important contributions by Shadley and L.A. designers Kathleen and Tommy Clements and Jane Hallworth. Theroux weighed in as well.

Aniston describes the centuries-spanning decor as “Old World meets New World,” a polyglot mix of hand-painted wallpaper and midcentury furniture, silk rugs and polished concrete, antique Japanese screens and Abstract Expressionist paintings. Yet for all the pedigreed pieces on display—artworks by Adolph Gottlieb, Robert Motherwell, and Glenn Ligon; furnishings by Vladimir Kagan, Edward Wormley, and Arturo Pani—the real triumph rests in the harmony of the various decorative compositions within Shadley’s reconceived interior architecture.

Garden designer Marcello Villano and landscape architect Anne Attinger reorganized the alfresco spaces as a series of interconnected outdoor rooms, terraces, and Asian-inspired pocket gardens.

But Jennifer is extremely private person, she would never allow public into her home. I guess this house is going on a market soon..

amazing space and such a lovely interview. I adore him and I love how he talks about the process. If I could afford someone like him that's who I would choose to design my house with me. I feel like it's a completely collaborative effort with him.

I can't stand this house. It's museum-ish..It's not comfy and that Blackman Cruz jazz..Ugh..It's not attractive at all..he's a good designer. I don't like Aniston's taste..It looks a lot like the Beverly Hills home she had..that was actually better as far as the lanai and the kitchen v/Pizza oven w/stones and the wine rack..It was really the best part of the house..The Chagall is EXPENSIVE..It's in the millions..That kind of art like Picasso is super expensive.I don't like that orange painting she had at BH home and now this…I find it rather odd..Just because it's expensive does not make it great. It's just pretentious..So she and Justin broke up and that's the end of that…. Another divorce..I saw that one coming a mile away..I gave that one 2 years..Should have bet in Vegas..The designer seems cool. This chick interrupts too much… She should get a cozy looking home..this is too sharp edges looking and it's kind of boring and not comfortable..I'm not in love it and I've seen incredible homes for less money as she paid $21 million or so for this??? She only lived in the BH home for 7 months as it took 2 full years to gut it and tear it apart and rebuild and then she sold it for about $25 million or so..so she made a profit..It was okay.It looked like a hotel..that same kind of look..Is this supposed to be impressive because I don't like it at all……………………

Brad Pitt in your life neap tide time is she helps you to buoy up again. You leave free she sadly to give up now oneself. You are the ungreatful fellow. Child already 16 years old. The coarsening can understand you naturally with Jolie heartless separating. Also can know you with the Jen relations. God bless Jennifer Aniston.

She was already splitting with Justin while making a statement that she did not want to be any other place else but with her husband and her dogs. Good for you Justin to let her go. Live the life you want and not her IDEA. Good for you in being your own man instead of living in her shadow or the shadow of her previous marriage to Brad. Good luck to you Justin.

I wouldn't have guessed this was Jennifer's home in a million years. It's much more masculine than I would've expected. Is it because of Justin's gray/black/NY design style? To me, it does not seem to fit Jennifer at all. If I were her, I would not feel that that's my dream home, and when you think of how much it all cost (both the house and everything in it), that's really, really sad.
