If you are planning to do your house in greater detail, chipboard is preferable and secondarily poster board

Usually a school that teaches architecture has some classes that goes into modelling, this a tool for an architect to convey their vision to others. People do not go to school to learn these modelling techniques, they go to school to be an architect, which is MUCH more than just modelling.

if i'm using matte board thats 1/16 in thick, how do I connect two edges together forming a corner? do I have to take the extra thickness that are going to stick out into account?

A note for the square in the beginning if you draw a little end to glue on it
    it would be much easier
