How is this a real life renovation? Certainly not a typical one – who the hell has a personal designer? Now mY renovation was what I would call a real life renovation – no experience at all and did it all my self by watching youtube videos, including bathroom, kitchen and full moulding throughout ALL while having a full time job and social life (just took me 5 years to finish everything and still not quite done with kitchen OR 2nd bathroom). I know mine is an extreme example but this is anything but a typical real life renovation when you have experts throughout the whole process.

Awwww…the annoyance of seeing people read the comments and then writing the same comments that got a lot of likes so their comment can get as many likes. So lame. STFU about her budget and STFU about the house decor.

The arch'l character of the house is a mess. Nothing makes it look right.

Glad she likes it but couldn't give that mess to me. Soon as I bought my distressed house interviewed trades, went to Habitat, went through homestores and made notebook of what I liked and where it was, picked up things on sale. Got lazy with the roofer and bowed to his demand of buying shingles from place that could place them on roof and didn't scream when he failed to pull the gutters as he said, figure he screwed me by 3k. always had bought and placed all materials before and after. Taking a break from trades for a while , wasn't getting references from them even with repeated requests and won't do as did with really small project and just be on phone…found out later was friend of his. So many crooks! Thinking need a place we can name names of the crooks and show what they did . Homeadvisor is a joke. will be doing most of the work myself or being right next to worker. First contractor couldn't find the stud in the wall he had just built!! BTW you can life without a shower, stove and fullsized fridge just fine, did it for a while. be creative!

I love watching renovation programmes and what I've learned from Mike Holmes is – 1, get references from your contractor & check them out by visiting the properties in question, 2, make sure you get a contract,, 3, all permits required for electrics, plumbing etc, 4, with hold final payment until work is completed and your satisfied with the work. Good luck to anyone who is renovating their home, I wish you a trouble free experience.

love this show, I feel bad for the lady getting taken advantage of. I am a single blond too and I have had the same thing happen to me on various jobs over the years, I do not care for the dark color scheme she picked although if she is happy that's all that counts. she does need a shower door though.

I'm not into her decorative aesthetics, for sure. Lots of people calling it ugly but it's her house to color as she likes…so what does it matter whether anyone else likes it or not or how much it cost her? Somebody put food on their table because she spent money on her choices.

We're remodeling our home on a much smaller scale with the tiniest budget you can get by with and it still costs a TON of money. Let me assure any critics, you get much more done and protect your pocketbook better if you firmly and consistently get into your contractor's face, insisting on explanations for everything. They don't like it and they'll try to make you look like a jerk and if you're a woman, you'll get called a b., but you've got to do it. If they don't have the time or willingness to hear you out or to compromise on negotiable topics, you've got to replace them. The handwriting was on the wall re: this contractor right from the beginning. I'm guessing she went with a friend because he gave a cheaper quote. Seems like she was trying to have it all without being being willing to spend what it cost…so maybe she thought she could cut corners on the contractor in order to buy more? If that's true, then she may have sabotaged herself; however, I've heard of people who spent BIG money on their contractor to try to avoid this and they still ended up with the same results as she got!

It's a pain to do the research necessary to get the best contractor available and it takes time but Mike Holmes' advice on selecting a contractor is the best there is. Even then, it helps to be educated on the process of remodeling, check prices for yourself, visit the site regularly, stay on site as much as possible, ask for explanations, and get it in writing. (Or do it yourself. Often we've found that we can buy the tools, teach ourselves and make it for ourselves for a lot less money and drama and still end up with something better.) OR! LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS! That thing you think you "have to have" may be outdated or broken by the time you sell your home and buyers are talking about having to replace it.

The Problem we've found about "get it in writing" is this……as soon as you ask for it, there are contractors who look at you sideways, say "Sure" and "I'll email it to you." and that's the last you hear from them. A small per cent will turn aggressive at that point, trying to control and bully you into accepting their bid. People like that will bully you the whole way thru the job. I've had a few laugh mockingly and make claims that "it can't be done" or begin by making fun of competitors while talking up their abilities. All such people should be shown the door while you keep looking for the right contractor. If you're in a hurry, you may pay the price of bitter experience over and over.

The real problem is that anybody can go into business for themself as a home contractor. There is no licensing standard that ensures the home owner of skill and talent or truthfulness and honesty. The lesson? Home remodeling is not for the faint of heart or for folks with unrealistic expectations. Going thru remodeling targets both tendencies with ruthless precision.

100 grand is no money? WTF I can build a house from the ground up for that. The thing that pisses me off about fake remodeling programs is they're always scripted and waste money on furnishings rather than on the home itself.

WIth the way she decorated that house, she obviously isn't planning on have anymore relationships with men. She's supposedly in her early 30's…..I don't think so. That new interior looks like someone in their 60's did it. It scream estrogen to the extreme, old estrogen. I see a golden girls scenario, cats, or experimentation being a lesbian.

Call HGTV in the future…….this remodel sucks….100000 lit on fire, I'm sure there were quite a few drunken nights crying over this disaster. I'm sure she's still doing mental gymnastics to rationalize and down play how ugly it is.
