Remodel Start to Finish: When Do You Need Building Permits?

When do you need building permits? Well, most home remodeling projects require a building permit. This is often an area that lesser “Chuck in a Truck” type contractors will skip over in order to keep costs down. You may be incorrectly told that your project doesn’t require a permit.

How do you know when you need a building permit?
-Anytime there is electrical, HVAC or plumbing work (beyond just replacing a toilet or faucet.)
-If there are no changes to exterior walls or interior structural work, a simple online or over-the-counter permit can be required for general remodeling, kitchens and baths.
-Removing load bearing walls, changing windows, modifying door sizes, adding square footage of living space or any changes to the building envelope (exterior walls and roof system) require a building permit.
